Rocky Jones: Space Ranger (1954)

Cruising the galaxy in his space ship “The Orbit Jet,” Space Ranger Rocky Jones (Richard Crane), Vena Ray (Sally Mansfield), co-pilot Winky (Scotty Beckett) and 10-year-old Bobby defend Earth and themselves against space-bound evil doers. This early sci-fi space series was the first to actually be shot on film, as opposed to all the others being done live.

Scotty Beckett was one of the most successful child actors of the 1930's and 1940's. His descent into a life of alcoholism, drugs and crime remains one of the most tragic of Hollywood stories. On May 8th, 1968, Scotty checked himself into the Royal Palms Hotel, a Hollywood nursing home, after suffering a beating in what may have been a drug deal gone wrong. Two days later on May 10th, he was found dead from an overdose of barbiturates. The third time had been the charm. He left behind a note, he left behind a son and he left behind some wonderful films and memories that will endure for eternity.
